I’ve always been reticent to share how I built my business—not for gatekeeping (i.e. girlbossing, gaslighting) reasons, but because it feels like a strange flex that exceeds my qualifications. You know those kids stacked in a trenchcoat, pretending to be an adult? That kind of vibe.
But, I suppose, multiple truths always exist simultaneously. On the one hand, I’m a reckless Pisces Moon hurtling through life, taking chances, placing bets, hoping things work out. And, on the other, I’m a methodical, hardworking, and strategic Capricorn Rising. I’ve scaled my business exponentially, without external monetary support. I’ve worked with thousands of clients, collaborated with incredible brands, appeared on national television multiple times, and—perhaps most importantly—maintained gainful self-employment on my own terms. Of course I’m proud of these achievements, and I’m humbled to be on this magnificent journey.
There were a few pivotal moments early in my career that paved the way for future opportunities: Hosting in-person astrology workshops, securing a weekly horoscope column at Allure, and signing my first book deal for Mixology of Astrology. Even after all these years, I still consider these milestones major turning points that allowed me to build a clientele, establish a solid professional reputation, and develop practical skills as an author.
But these important moments were byproducts of thoughtful decisions—decisions guided by specific pillars that drive the engine of my business. These modes of operating serve as my professional framework, helping me develop strategies, determine whether to accept (or decline) projects, and define next steps. These are the principles I established early on, and they continue to yield fruitful results to this day. It’s my secret sauce.
And now, I want to share my secret sauce with you. This proverbial recipe has been crucial in shaping and growing my business, and is applicable to anyone forging a career or carving out their own unique path. (I know because I’ve shared these concepts with clients and friends across various industries, and the outcomes have always been excellent.) Some ingredients may surprise you—especially since they contradict the advice so frequently regurgitated by "coaches” on social media. More on that in a minute.
So, here’s how I approached building my business, as well as tips, tricks, and techniques you can use on your professional journey. Let’s get cooking!
