Venus Portal: 5 Manifestation Rituals
Easy and powerful spells to ignite this weekend's Venus cazimi
Evidently, this week is all about portals. Thanks to social media, the 8/8 Lion’s Gate Portal has become increasingly popular, and—even though this concept is more ~new age~ than astrological—I’ll gladly accept a threshold. I mean, sure, why not? Liminal spaces are always trés chic. But, for my cosmic purists, I have even better news. Just a few days after the alleged Lion’s Gate door swings open, there’s a really big deal mystical portal that’s actually astrologically-approved.
On Sunday, August 13, Venus—the planet of values and desires—will undergo a radial metamorphosis… and so can you!
Before we delve into this upcoming magick, I just want to mention that, whether by lion or by planet, portals have been beckoning us this entire week. And this is TANC (pssst, that stands for There Are No Coincidences). Obviously, the universe is working both macro and micro, inviting us to experience transformation on an individual level.
What do I mean by this? Let me give you an example: In 2017, after four years of studying astrology, I was just beginning to build my private practice. At that time, I was writing weekly horoscopes for Allure and hosting occasional in-person workshops, but I certainly wasn’t making enough money to support myself as a full-time astrologer—so I was also working as an administrative assistant at a finance firm. And then, suddenly, one day without warning, the CEO decided to close the company. In an instant, 400+ people lost their jobs. Shortly thereafter, I was with my teacher, Anne Ortelee, who assured me that this lay-off ~obviously~ happened so that I could step into my astrology business fully and completely.
I asked: But what about the other 400 people who lost their jobs? Were they all laid off so that I could become an astrologer?
I’ll never forget her response—cool, calm, and effortlessly wise: No, each person has something else they need to do, too.
Similarly, with the concept of “portals” being tossed around this week, there seems to be a collective calling for individual transformation. So… what is a portal, anyway? In metaphysical practices, portals are in-between spaces where matter meets spirit; they’re pathways that transport us from one realm to another. And, in addition to certain dates (i.e. 8/8) or astrological happenings (i.e. Venus cazimi), physical spaces can be portals (doorways, chimneys, windowsills, for example), along with transitional times of day (such as dawn and dusk). Fundamentally, portals are mystical apertures that propel motion. Portals shift our vantage by enabling us to enter different states of mind. Portals catalyze change.
And the upcoming Venus Portal is a powerful one. On August 13 , we’ll be halfway through Venus Retrograde, which started on July 22. (Don’t forget to check your Venus Retrograde horoscope here—it includes what you should be focusing on harnessing this weekend.) Venus’ backwards motion marks a very important transition in its cycle: During this 40-day and 40-night duration, Venus will transition from an Evening Star (rising after the Sun) to a Morning Star (rising before the Sun).
I highly recommend learning about Venus’ extraordinarily spiritual orbit—it’s mysterious and sexy and deeply misunderstood. You see, the current Venus Retrograde we’re experiencing isn’t an isolated incident; it’s part of a much wider and more extensive cycle that repeats every eight-years. In other words, we’re currently revisiting storylines that were last introduced way back in 2015. Wild, right? I agree—get the whole scoop here.
Suffice it to say, over the last few weeks, Evening Star Venus has reached its wits’ end; it’s melancholy, defeated, and insecure. Sound familiar? If you’ve been struggling with feelings of inadequacy or wondering why things just aren’t getting better, it could be that your own experiences are mirroring Venus’ solitary journey. Venus is, after all, the planet associated with passion and pleasure and value—it’s an important expression of our own self-worth.
But all that’s about to change. At 7:08AM, Venus will meet the Sun in the sky, forming a cazimi. (Cazimi is the transliteration from the Arabic kaṣmīmī, which means “as if in the heart.” In astrology, cazimi is a planet in conjunction with the Sun, or “in the heart of” the Sun.) And, when these two celestial bodies meet, Venus will temporarily disappear as it moves across the Sun’s fiery torso. Think of this as a quick costume change; when Venus resurfaces, it will have traded its Evening Star garb for a shiny, new ensemble—from now until June 2024, Venus will be a Morning Star, emerging before the Sun.
Venus symbolically rising from the ashes is one of the most important spiritual occurrences to take place in the cosmos. As reflected in the numerous 40-day/40-night allusions in the Bible, Venus’ transition from Evening Star to Morning Star signals a time of rebirth, renewal, and revitalization. For thousands of years, Venus cazimi has been considered a sacred turning-point that connotes new beginnings. This is the time for you to affirm your value, worth, and open your heart to exciting new opportunities that spark passion on a soul level. So, if you’re going to work with any portal in 2023, let it be this one.
Here are 5 ways to manifest with the Venus Portal on Sunday, August 13. Feel free to work with one technique, combine a few, or create your own! Don’t overthink it. There’s only one wrong way to make magick: Not making it at all. Experiment, have fun, and enjoy this enchanted cazimi!
